The French Riviera for Indian Travellers: Nice, Cannes and Monaco

The second half of most France weeks, and the region with the widest price band in the country — because on this coast the hotel, not the itinerary, decides what you pay.

In short

French Riviera packages run ₹95,000 to ₹2,98,000 per person for three to six nights — the widest band in France, because the hotel decides the price on this coast. The season runs latest here: Nice stays warm into October, while July and August are the most crowded and most expensive weeks of the year.

What a Riviera trip costs, and why the band is so wide

₹95,000 to ₹2,98,000 is a bigger spread than any other French region, and it is not because the sightseeing differs. It is the hotel.

Nice, Cannes and Monaco: what each one is actually for

Nice is where you stay. It has the old town, the Promenade, the markets, the food, the beach and the airport, and it is the only one of the three that works as a base rather than as an outing. Almost every Riviera itinerary that goes wrong goes wrong by staying somewhere else and commuting.

Cannes is a half-day. The seafront, the film-festival architecture, a walk and a coffee. It is genuinely pleasant and it is not a place most Indian travellers need a night in, unless the point of the trip is to be there.

Monaco is a half-day and a curiosity — a separate country you can visit on an afternoon, with the harbour, the casino and a view down the coast. Combined with Cannes it makes one very full day out of Nice, which is the standard way a two-night Riviera stay gets used.

What this means practically: two nights on the Riviera at the end of a Paris week is enough to see the coast properly, provided you base in Nice and spend one day in Nice itself and one day running along the coast. Four to six nights is a different sort of holiday — a sitting-down holiday, which after five days of Paris monuments is a legitimate and underrated plan.

The season on this coast runs later than the rest of France

This is the single most useful thing to know about the Riviera and the reason it pairs so well with a September trip.

The coast stays pleasant well into October, later than Paris and much later than the Loire or Normandy. So a late-September France week gets you a Paris that has emptied out after August and a Riviera that is still warm — the best of both halves, at the softer autumn prices, with the shortest queues of the travel year.

The inverse is also true and it is worth stating bluntly. In July and August the Riviera is the most crowded and most expensive place in France, and it inverts against Paris: a Nice seafront room in August can cost more than a comparable Paris room, and the same room in November can cost half. If your dates are in the summer school holidays and the budget is tight, the honest advice is to spend the money on Paris and keep the Riviera short — or to swap it for the Loire, which does not spike the same way.

Winter on the Riviera is quiet and cheap. It is also a coast out of season, with a lot of the seasonal life shut. Good for a calm few days; wrong if you were imagining the beach.

Practical notes for Indian travellers on the coast

Food

  • The Indian food infrastructure here is much thinner than in Paris — this is the one part of a France trip to plan meals for rather than assume
  • Nice's markets are excellent, which makes an apartment with a kitchen more attractive here than almost anywhere else in France
  • Mediterranean food is naturally vegetable-heavy, so a vegetarian eats better here than the reputation of French food suggests
  • If anyone in the group is strictly Jain, carry what you need for these nights rather than hoping

Getting around

  • Nice, Cannes and Monaco are connected along the coast and you do not need a car for the standard three
  • Nice itself is walkable, which is why basing there beats basing anywhere else
  • The airport at Nice is why a France week ending here saves a day over backtracking to Paris
  • For a day along the coast, leave early — the return in the evening is when everything is busiest

When to come

  • Late September and early October: warm, quiet, softer prices. The best fortnight of the Riviera year
  • May and June: excellent, and the Paris half of the trip is at its best too
  • July and August: the most expensive and most crowded weeks in France, and the coast inverts against Paris on price
  • November to March: cheap and calm, with much of the seasonal life closed. A different trip entirely

Questions we answer daily

How much is a French Riviera tour package from India?

₹95,000 to ₹2,98,000 per person for three to six nights — the widest band of any French region. The spread is driven by the hotel rather than by the itinerary; a seafront room in the top category on this coast is one of the most expensive rooms in France.

How many days do I need on the French Riviera?

Two nights is enough to see it properly if you base in Nice: one day in Nice itself and one day running along the coast to Cannes and Monaco. Four to 6 nights is a different kind of holiday — a slower, sitting-down one, which after five days of Paris monuments is genuinely worth considering.

Should I stay in Nice, Cannes or Monaco?

Nice. It is the only one of the three that works as a base — old town, Promenade, markets, beach and an airport — and the others are half-day outings from it. Riviera itineraries usually go wrong by basing somewhere else and commuting in. 2 nights based in Nice covers the coast; 4 to 6 makes it a slower holiday.

When is the best time to visit the French Riviera?

Late September and early October: still warm, far quieter, softer prices, and it pairs with a Paris that has emptied after August. May and June are also excellent. July and August are the most crowded and most expensive weeks of the French year on this coast. Packages run ₹95,000 to ₹2,98,000, and summer sits at the top of that band.

Is there Indian food on the French Riviera?

Much less than in Paris, and this is the one stretch of a France trip where meals need planning rather than assuming. Nice's markets are very good, which makes an apartment with a kitchen more attractive here than elsewhere, and Mediterranean cooking is naturally vegetable-heavy. Plan these 2 nights' meals in advance rather than assuming, as you can in Paris.

Can I fly home from Nice instead of Paris?

Yes, and on a 7-night itinerary that ends on the coast it usually saves a full day over backtracking. Nice has its own airport. It sometimes costs a little more on the ticket, and a day of a short trip is expensive at any fare.

Is Monaco worth visiting?

As a half-day from Nice, yes — the harbour, the casino quarter and a separate country stamped into an afternoon. It is not worth a night for most Indian travellers, and combining it with Cannes makes one full and satisfying day out of a two-night Riviera stay. A 2-night Nice base covers both it and Cannes without a second hotel.

Is the Riviera worth it in winter?

It is cheap and calm, and a lot of the seasonal life is shut. If you want a quiet few days by the sea with short queues everywhere, it works. If you were imagining beach weather, it does not, and we would rather point you at Paris in winter and the Riviera in September. Off-season airfare of ₹35,000 to ₹50,000 is the main argument in its favour.
