Where to Go in France, and Which Region Suits Which Trip
Almost every Indian France trip is Paris plus one other place. This page is about choosing the other place — with the price band, the right season and the honest case against each one.

The regions, compared
Read the last column first. The mistake most first-time France itineraries make is choosing a region for its reputation and then travelling in the month it is at its worst.

Nice, Cannes and Monaco — the second half of most France weeks, and the region whose season runs latest into the autumn.
How to choose the second half of a France trip
Almost nobody flies from India to France for one region. The real question on a seven-night trip is what goes alongside Paris, and there are only four sensible answers.
The Riviera, if you want two completely different Frances in one week. City then Mediterranean, one rail sector, one visa jurisdiction, and you can fly home from Nice instead of backtracking. This is the default and it is the default for good reasons.
The Loire or Normandy, if the point is countryside, food and châteaux rather than another skyline. This is the better second France trip and a slightly less obvious first one. It also has a commercial quirk worth knowing: Indian search demand for these regions is very low, which means fewer operators bother, which usually means better properties at the same money.
Switzerland, if the Alps are non-negotiable. The most-requested combination in the Indian market at ₹1,35,000–2,75,000 — and the one that can move your Schengen application to a different country if you are not counting nights.
Nothing, if this is a first international trip with elderly parents or small children. Seven nights in Paris is not a failure of ambition. It is one hotel, no packing, and a pace that a family can hold.

Alsace in early December
- The Christmas markets at Strasbourg and Colmar, which are a sellable holiday rather than a consolation
- Early December, not late — the week either side of Christmas prices like peak summer and books out months ahead
- Short days, so plan two things a day and let the evenings be the point
- A genuinely different France from the one in the brochures, and almost nobody in this market sells it

Where should I go in France besides Paris?
The Riviera for a contrast in one week, the Loire or Normandy for countryside and châteaux at ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,65,000, Alsace in early December for the Christmas markets, or the Alps if skiing is the point. On a seven-night first trip, Paris plus the Riviera is the default for good reasons.
Is the Loire Valley worth visiting from India?
For a second France trip, or for travellers who would rather see one region properly than three quickly, yes. It sits in the ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,65,000 slow-France band and Indian demand for it is low enough that the same budget usually buys a better property. Avoid deep winter, when much of it closes or shortens hours.
When are the Christmas markets in Strasbourg and Colmar?
They run through the late-November to December window, and early December is the right time to go. The week either side of Christmas and New Year prices like peak summer and books out months ahead, which is the one exception inside France's otherwise cheap winter season. For most of December airfare sits in the ₹35,000 to ₹50,000 off-season band.
Can I visit the French Alps on a Paris trip?
You can, but two Alpine nights bolted onto a Paris week is not the Alps — it is a long travel day and a view. If mountains are the reason for the trip, either do a proper Alpine stay of three to five nights or take the Paris plus Switzerland combination at ₹1,35,000 to ₹2,75,000.
How many regions can I see in a week?
Two, comfortably: Paris plus one other. Three is a transport schedule with sightseeing attached. 7 nights holds 2 bases and 3 day trips; it does not hold 4 bases, and the difference shows up as mornings spent on platforms with luggage.
Is Provence good for Indian travellers?
It is beautiful and it needs a car, which is the catch. Most Indian itineraries are built on rail and transfers, and Provence rewards driving between villages. If nobody in the group wants to drive in France, the Riviera delivers more of the same pleasure with far less logistics. It sits in the ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,65,000 slow-France band for 4 to 7 nights.
Which French region is best in September and October?
The Riviera, which stays warm well into autumn, and the Loire, where the harvest is actually happening rather than being described to you. September and October are the best-value months in France generally — softer prices, thinner crowds and everything still open. Airfare also falls out of the ₹55,000 to ₹85,000 in-season band as autumn sets in.
