The France Visa Document Checklist, Built for an Indian File

A working checklist rather than a list of nouns: what each document has to prove, what makes it fail, and what changes if you are self-employed, retired, a homemaker, a student or being sponsored.

In short

A France Schengen file needs a passport, the France-Visas form and photo, confirmed accommodation and flight reservations for every day, travel insurance with at least EUR 30,000 medical cover, six months of bank statements, income proof and a cover letter. Incomplete paperwork and weak financial evidence are the two most common causes of the 15.8% Indian refusal rate.

Reviewed 20 September 2026 · checked against the France-Visas requirement set each quarter; the authoritative list for your file is the personalised checklist the France-Visas portal generates from your own answers

Print this page, but obey the other one

The France-Visas portal generates a checklist from the answers you give on your own form. That personalised checklist, not this page and not any other website, is what the counter works through. Use this page to understand what each item is for and to spot the problems early; use the portal's checklist to order the file the night before you travel to Chennai.

The core checklist — every applicant, every time

Tick these in order. The right-hand column is the part most lists leave out: what the document is actually being read for.

The financial documents: what “enough balance” actually means

Every visa forum on the internet has a number for this and none of them is official. There is no published minimum bank balance for a France Schengen application, and any site that gives you a hard figure is guessing at a threshold that does not exist in that form. What the file is assessed on is whether your money credibly covers your trip and whether it looks like your money.

So the question to answer is not “is ₹X enough” but “does this statement fund this itinerary with room to spare, and does it look like an account someone actually lives out of”. That gives you something you can work with:

  • Start from the trip cost, not from a rumour. A seven-day France trip costs ₹1.15–1.8 lakh per person at the budget end and ₹1.85–2.85 lakh mid-range. If your package price is ₹1.4 lakh a head for a family of three, the file needs to show comfortable coverage of roughly ₹4.2 lakh of committed cost plus spending money — not a balance that exactly equals it on the last day of the statement.
  • Prepaid costs count in your favour. Flights, hotels and the package itself, paid and documented, reduce what your balance still has to prove. Show the receipts.
  • Explain deposits, or do not make them. A large, unexplained credit landing three weeks before you apply is one of the most reliable ways to attract scrutiny. If a family member has genuinely transferred money, treat that as sponsorship and document it as sponsorship rather than letting it appear as an anonymous lump.
  • Six months of consistency beats one month of comfort. A statement that shows salary in, EMI out, regular living expenses and a balance that survives all of it is stronger evidence than a temporarily inflated closing figure.

Insufficient financial documentation is the single most-cited refusal cause for Indian applicants. Note the word: documentation, not funds. People with the money get refused because they proved it badly.

What changes depending on how you earn

Salaried

  • Employer letter stating your role, tenure, salary and explicit approval of leave for the exact travel dates
  • Recent salary slips consistent with the bank credits
  • ITR for recent years
  • The cleanest category — the failures here are usually a leave letter without dates or an employer contact that cannot be verified

Self-employed or business

  • Business registration and, where applicable, GST registration
  • Business and personal bank statements — both, because the officer needs to see what is yours
  • ITR for recent years, which does more work here than in any other category
  • A note explaining who runs the business while you are away; this doubles as evidence of ties to India

Retired

  • Pension documentation or the income source you actually live on
  • Bank statements showing that income arriving regularly
  • Property or deposit documentation as evidence of ties
  • Insurance is the item to check hardest — cover for older travellers is where the EUR 30,000 minimum most often quietly fails

Homemaker, student or dependant

  • A sponsorship letter from the person funding the trip, with their relationship stated
  • The sponsor's bank statements, ITR and income proof — the sponsor's finances are what is being assessed
  • Proof of the relationship: marriage certificate, birth certificate or family passport pages
  • For students, a bonafide certificate from the institution and evidence you are returning to it

The cover letter, written properly

The cover letter is the only document in the file where you speak in your own voice, and it is the one most people download from a blog. A template with the names changed reads exactly like a template with the names changed. It should be one page and it should answer five questions in order.

1. Who you are and what you do. Name, passport number, occupation, employer or business, how long you have been there.
2. What you are asking for. A short-stay Schengen visa for tourism, for specific dates, entering and leaving on specific flights.
3. Where you will be. The itinerary in three or four lines — cities, nights, the hotels, how you move between them. This is where an operator-issued itinerary earns its place in the file.
4. Who is paying, and with what. Self-funded from salary or business income, or sponsored, with the sponsor named and their documents referenced. State what is already paid.
5. Why you are coming back. The job you have leave from, the business you run, the family and property here. Not a promise — evidence, tied to documents already in the file.

Two things to leave out. Do not write about how long you have dreamed of seeing the Eiffel Tower; it is not evidence and it uses space. And do not claim anything you have not documented — the letter is read against the file, and a sentence the file does not support is worse than no sentence.

Weak evidence of ties to India is a top-ranked refusal cause for Indian applicants, and point 5 is where you address it. A first-time traveller with an approved leave letter, a seven-year employment history and a home loan in progress has a stronger tie story than someone who simply asserts that they will return.

The last check, the night before Chennai

Almost every avoidable failure in this file is a mismatch rather than a missing document, and mismatches are found by reading across documents rather than down a list. Sit with the whole file and check these five things against each other:

  1. Dates. The form, the flight reservation, the hotel bookings, the insurance policy and the leave letter should all describe the same trip. The insurance is the usual offender — it has to cover the day you land and the day you fly home.
  2. Nights. Count the accommodation nights. They must cover every night you are in the Schengen area, with no gaps in the middle for a night you had not thought about.
  3. Names and spellings. Exactly as in the passport, everywhere, including the hotel bookings.
  4. The main-destination rule. Count the nights by country one final time. If France is not where you spend the most nights, this is the wrong application.
  5. The money story. Read the bank statement as a stranger would. If there is a credit you would have to explain out loud, put the explanation in the file now.

For a Coimbatore, Madurai or Trichy applicant this check is worth an hour of anybody's evening, because the alternative is a second day's travel to Chennai. It is the single most valuable thing we do for clients who are otherwise perfectly capable of filing their own application.

Questions we answer daily

What documents are required for a France tourist visa from India?

Passport, the completed France-Visas form and photo, confirmed accommodation for every night, a return flight reservation, a day-by-day itinerary, insurance with at least EUR 30,000 medical cover, six months of bank statements, ITR, income and employment proof, and a cover letter. Additional documents apply if you are self-employed, retired or sponsored.

How much bank balance is required for a France Schengen visa?

There is no published minimum. What is assessed is whether the balance credibly funds your itinerary with margin. Work from the real trip cost — ₹1.15 to ₹1.8 lakh per person for seven days at the budget end — and show six months of consistent statements rather than a balance topped up just before applying.

How many months of bank statements do I need?

Six is the usual expectation, stamped by the bank. 6 months matters more than a high closing balance because it shows income arriving and normal expenses leaving. A single month showing a large deposit is the pattern most likely to attract questions rather than settle them.

Is ITR mandatory for a France visa?

Recent income tax returns are expected in nearly every file and they do the heaviest lifting for self-employed and business applicants, where there are no salary slips to corroborate income. If your ITR does not reconcile with your bank credits, fix the explanation before you file rather than at the counter. Recent years alongside 6 months of stamped statements is the usual expectation.

Do I need to book flights before the visa is approved?

You need a flight reservation matching your dates, not a paid non-refundable ticket. Issuing tickets before the visa is granted is how people lose money when a decision takes the full 30 days or goes against them. On a package, the reservations are issued against your booking.

What insurance do I need for a France visa?

Medical cover of at least EUR 30,000, valid across the Schengen area, covering every day of the stay including arrival and departure. This is a Schengen requirement rather than an operator upsell, and inadequate insurance is on every published list of refusal causes.

Can I write my own cover letter or should I use a template?

Write your own. A template with the names changed reads like one, and the letter is the only place you explain your circumstances in your own words. 1 page, 5 points: who you are, what you are asking for, where you will be, who is paying, and what brings you back to India.

What extra documents do homemakers and students need?

A sponsorship letter naming the sponsor and the relationship, plus the sponsor's bank statements, ITR and income proof, and documentary proof of the relationship. Students add a bonafide certificate from their institution. In sponsored files it is the sponsor's finances that are being assessed, so those documents carry the weight. The sponsor's finances must credibly cover the trip — ₹1.15 to ₹1.8 lakh a head for 7 days at the budget end.

Does the file need to be in a particular order?

Yes — the order printed on the personalised checklist the France-Visas portal generates from your own answers. That is what the counter works through, and a file assembled in a different order slows the appointment down and invites avoidable questions. France runs only 14 visa centres in India and slots are not easily rebooked.
