The France Schengen Visa from India, Written for a Tamil Nadu Applicant

The whole process from the France-Visas form to the passport landing back in your hand, including the part every other guide skips: what you do when the nearest visa centre is a day's travel away.

In short

A France Schengen short-stay visa costs EUR 90 for an adult (EUR 45 for children 6–11, free under 6) plus roughly ₹2,202 in VFS service charges, and is commonly processed in 15 to 30 days. You may apply from six months before travel, and no later than five days before. Tamil Nadu applicants give biometrics in Chennai.

The timeline that works, not the one that is legally permitted. The five-day legal floor exists so that emergencies are possible; building a holiday against it is how people end up with a refused application and non-refundable tickets.

First: are you even applying to the right country?

This is the rule that quietly sinks more Indian applications than any document does, and it takes thirty seconds to get right.

You apply to the Schengen country that is your main destination — the one where you will spend the most nights. If the nights are split equally between two countries, you apply to the one you will enter first. Applying at the wrong consulate is a listed refusal cause, and it is not a technicality the officer will wave through: the application is simply not theirs to decide.

For most people reading this the answer is obviously France, because the trip is Paris plus a second French city. But the single most popular Europe product in the Indian market is Paris plus Switzerland, and that one splits dangerously close. Four nights in Paris and three in Interlaken is France. Three in Paris and four in Lucerne is Switzerland. Three and three, entering through Zurich, is Switzerland. Count the nights on your actual confirmed hotel vouchers before you open the form, not on the version of the plan in your head.

Worth knowing as context: Switzerland has overtaken France and Germany as the most-applied-to Schengen destination for Indian applicants, though France remains a top-three filer and is still the most aspirational destination in the market. If the plan involves both, the decision genuinely matters.

The process, step by step

Step 1 — Fix the trip properly

An application is assessed against a specific, evidenced itinerary: dates, cities, accommodation, internal travel. A vague or unevidenced itinerary is one of the recurring refusal reasons for Indian applicants. This is the step people rush and the one that decides the outcome, because everything after it is paperwork about a plan that either holds together or does not.

Step 2 — Get the reservations that the file needs

Confirmed accommodation for every night and flight reservations matching your dates. These are not the same as paid tickets, and you should not buy non-refundable international tickets before the visa is issued. If you are travelling on a package, your operator issues these against the booking — it is one of the practical reasons packaged travellers have a lower refusal risk.

Step 3 — Buy insurance that meets the standard

Medical cover of at least EUR 30,000, valid across the Schengen area, covering the entire duration of stay including the day you land and the day you fly home. Inadequate insurance appears on every published list of refusal causes. A policy that ends the evening before your return flight is inadequate insurance.

Step 4 — Complete the France-Visas form online

The France-Visas portal produces your application, a receipt and a personalised checklist of what to bring. Print all three. The checklist is generated from your own answers, so it is more reliable than any generic list — including ours — and it is what the counter will work through.

Step 5 — Book the VFS appointment

France runs its India operation through VFS Global, with 14 centres across the country including Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Book the centre that serves your jurisdiction. Appointment availability is the least predictable part of the whole process and it is the reason to start three months out rather than six weeks out.

Step 6 — Attend in person for biometrics

Fingerprints and a photograph are taken at the centre. Applicants under 12 are exempt. Electronics are not permitted inside the centre, which matters more than it sounds if you have travelled several hours to get there — plan for where your phone and laptop will be during the appointment.

Step 7 — Wait, and track

Processing is commonly quoted at 15 to 30 days. It is not a queue you can see into, and the honest advice is to plan as though it will be 30 and be pleased if it is 15. Do not issue non-refundable tickets during this window.

Step 8 — Collect the passport

Only the applicant, or a person the applicant has specifically authorised, may collect the passport. If you live outside the city where you applied, arrange the authorisation or a courier return at the time of the appointment rather than discovering the rule three weeks later.

Where you apply from if you live in Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy or Salem

Here is the part no national guide writes, because the people writing them live in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.

France's visa application centre for Tamil Nadu is in Chennai, in the Egmore area. VFS has published a relocation notice for the France account, so the exact address must be confirmed at the time you book — we re-verify it quarterly and we will tell you the current one when we handle your file, but do not trust any address printed on any website, including this one, without checking it against VFS on the day.

If you live in Coimbatore, that is a day's travel each way for a biometric appointment that itself takes under an hour. Realistically it is an overnight or a very long day: an early flight or the overnight train, the appointment, and back. Madurai, Trichy, Salem and Erode are all in the same position. Some applicants use Bengaluru instead where it is genuinely closer or better connected for them, and that is permissible where the jurisdiction allows it — but check the jurisdiction rather than assume, because turning up at the wrong centre wastes the whole trip.

The practical consequences are worth stating plainly, because they are real costs that never appear in a visa fee table:

  • A day of leave, or two, per adult applicant.
  • Travel and often a night's accommodation in Chennai — for a family of four, this is frequently more than the visa fees themselves.
  • Every adult must attend in person for biometrics, so a family of four travels together. Children under 12 are exempt from biometrics but the application still has to be lodged.
  • A second trip if the file is incomplete, which is the outcome this entire site exists to prevent.

This is exactly why we run the document check before anyone books a train. A file that has been read line by line by someone who does this weekly does not generate a second trip to Chennai.

What the visa actually costs, all in

The fee is the small part. This is the total for a South Indian applicant, including the things a fee table never shows.

What we do, and what you still have to do yourself

Handled for you

  • The document check — every page read against the France-Visas checklist before anything is filed
  • Confirmed hotel vouchers and flight reservations for the whole itinerary, issued against your booking
  • A day-by-day itinerary document in the form the application expects
  • Insurance that meets the EUR 30,000 Schengen minimum, arranged rather than guessed at
  • Appointment booking and the current Chennai centre address, confirmed the week you travel
  • A cover letter drafted around your actual circumstances, not a template with your name dropped in

Only you can do

  • Attend the Chennai centre in person for biometrics — nobody can do this for you
  • Provide genuine financial documents; we will tell you if they are thin, and we will not help you dress them up
  • Hold a passport with sufficient validity and blank pages
  • Collect the passport, or formally authorise someone to collect it
  • Be honest on the form — a discrepancy between the form and the documents is the fastest route to a refusal

After you apply: tracking, collection and what a refusal looks like

Processing is commonly 15 to 30 days and the tracking you get is coarse. This is normal and it is not a signal about your outcome. What you should not do during this window is start spending money that depends on the answer.

When the passport is ready it must be collected by you or by someone you have authorised. For an applicant from Coimbatore or Madurai this is the second Chennai problem, and it has a solution — arrange the courier return or the authorisation at the appointment itself, when you are already standing in the building, rather than working it out from four hundred kilometres away.

If the decision goes against you, you receive a refusal with the grounds indicated. About one in six Indian applications ends this way — 15.8% of roughly 1.15 million applications in 2025, against a 14.8% global average, which is around 181,000 refusals. That is not a small, unlucky minority; it is a normal outcome that a lot of families are unprepared for. There is a right of appeal with a deadline, and there is the option of reapplying with a rebuilt file. Which of the two is correct depends entirely on what the grounds say, and we have a whole page on it.

Questions we answer daily

How do I apply for a France Schengen visa from Chennai?

Complete the France-Visas online form, book an appointment at the France visa application centre in Chennai, attend in person with your document file for biometrics, and collect the passport when processing finishes. Processing is commonly 15 to 30 days and the adult fee is EUR 90 plus roughly ₹2,202 in VFS charges.

Can I apply for a France visa from Coimbatore?

Not without travelling. France's visa application centre for Tamil Nadu is in Chennai, and biometrics must be given in person, so a Coimbatore applicant faces a day's travel each way. There are 14 France visa centres in India but none in Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy or Salem.

How much is the France visa fee for Indians in 2026?

EUR 90 for an adult, EUR 45 for children aged six to eleven and nothing for under-sixes, plus a VFS service charge of roughly ₹2,202. Published rupee equivalents run ₹7,200 to ₹7,500 for the fee. All in, budget about ₹10,500 at the low end and ₹14,400 for a typical file.

How long does a France Schengen visa take?

Commonly 15 to 30 days from the appointment. You may apply from six months before travel and must apply at least five days before departure. We advise filing about ten to twelve weeks out, which absorbs a slow decision without leaving you holding unusable tickets.

Which country should I apply to for a Paris and Switzerland trip?

The country where you spend the most nights. 4 Paris nights and 3 Swiss nights is a France application; three and four the other way is Switzerland. If the nights are equal, apply to whichever country you enter first. Getting this wrong is a listed refusal cause.

Is travel insurance compulsory for a France visa?

Yes. You need medical cover of at least EUR 30,000 valid across the Schengen area for the whole stay. Inadequate insurance is among the most commonly cited refusal reasons, and a policy that expires before your return flight counts as inadequate.

Do children need to give biometrics for a Schengen visa?

Applicants under 12 are exempt from biometrics, though the application still has to be lodged for them. Everyone aged 12 and above attends the centre in person. For a family from Coimbatore that means the adults and older children all travel to Chennai together.

Can someone else collect my passport from the visa centre?

Only if you have authorised them specifically. The rule is the applicant in person or an authorised person, and it is enforced. If you are travelling in from another district, arrange the authorisation or a courier return at the appointment itself rather than afterwards. For a Coimbatore applicant that saves a second day's travel after the 15 to 30 days of processing.

Can I take my phone into the visa application centre?

No. Electronics are not permitted inside. Plan for where your phone and any laptop will be during the appointment, which matters particularly if you have travelled from Coimbatore or Madurai and have nowhere to leave them. Everyone aged 12 and above attends in person, so it affects every adult in the party.

Does using a tour operator improve my chances?

It removes specific, documented failure modes rather than influencing the decision. Vague itineraries, missing accommodation proof and inadequate insurance are all on the published refusal list, and all three are things an operator's confirmed bookings and issued itinerary answer directly. The financial evidence is still yours to provide. About 15.8% of Indian applications were refused in 2025, mostly on documentation.
