Why France Schengen Visas Get Refused for Indians — and What to Do Next
One in six Indian applications fails. This page ranks the reasons, gives the specific fix for each, and sets out honestly when to appeal and when to rebuild the file and apply again.
In short
About 15.8% of Indian Schengen applications were refused in 2025 — roughly 181,000 of 1.15 million — against a 14.8% global average. The leading causes are insufficient financial documentation, incomplete paperwork, weak evidence of ties to India, inadequate insurance, a vague itinerary and applying at the wrong consulate.

The refusal causes, ranked, with the fix for each
Compiled from consular reporting and the published analyses of the visa specialists who see Indian files in volume. The order reflects how often each appears in Indian refusals, not how serious it is.
| # | Cause | What it looks like in a real file | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Insufficient financial documentation | A balance that barely covers the trip on the last day of the statement; a large unexplained credit three weeks before applying; income with no visible source | Six months of consistent statements, ITR that reconciles with them, receipts for what you have already paid, and sponsorship documented as sponsorship |
| 2 | Incomplete paperwork | A missing night in the hotel bookings; a leave letter with no dates; the form saying one thing and a document saying another | Assemble to the France-Visas personalised checklist and read across documents, not down a list, before you travel to the centre |
| 3 | Weak evidence of ties to India | An assertion that you will return, with nothing behind it; a young single applicant with no leave letter and no assets documented | Employment with approved leave, business registration, property, family dependants — evidenced, and referenced in the cover letter |
| 4 | Inadequate insurance | Cover below the EUR 30,000 medical minimum, or a policy that starts a day late or ends the evening before the return flight | A Schengen-wide policy at or above EUR 30,000 covering every day including arrival and departure. Check this twice for travellers over 65 |
| 5 | Vague or unevidenced itinerary | “Paris and around” for nine days; cities with no accommodation against them; internal travel nobody has booked | A day-by-day itinerary with a confirmed booking behind every night and named transport between cities |
| 6 | Applying at the wrong consulate | A Paris-plus-Switzerland trip with more Swiss nights, filed as a France application | Count nights by country on the confirmed vouchers. Most nights wins; if equal, the country of first entry |
| 7 | Inconsistency between form and documents | Employer, address, dates or marital status differing between the form and the file | Fill the form from the documents rather than from memory, then re-read both together |
| 8 | Doubt about the purpose of travel | A holiday itinerary that does not match the stated purpose, or a stated purpose that does not match the applicant's circumstances | Say plainly what the trip is, and let the itinerary and the payments corroborate it |
| 9 | Passport problems | Insufficient validity beyond the return date, too few blank pages, damage | Check validity and pages before you pay any fee — this is the cheapest failure to avoid and one of the most common |
| 10 | Undeclared previous refusal | An earlier Schengen refusal left off the new form | Declare it. A previous refusal is survivable; concealing one is much harder to come back from |
Reading the refusal you have been given
A Schengen refusal is not a letter of explanation. It is a standard notice with grounds indicated against it, and the entire value of the document is in which grounds were marked. Before anything else — before the phone calls, before rebooking anything — identify them precisely, because appealing a financial-documentation refusal and appealing a wrong-consulate refusal are completely different exercises and only one of them is worth doing.
The grounds broadly divide into two families, and the family matters more than the specific wording:
Evidence grounds. The consulate was not persuaded of something: your funds, your ties, your purpose, the reliability of your itinerary. These are the common ones for Indian applicants, and they are the ones a rebuilt file answers. An appeal here only makes sense if you can show the evidence was in the file and was overlooked.
Procedural grounds. Something was wrong with the application itself: the wrong consulate, an invalid passport, a policy below the insurance floor, a missing document. These are usually not arguable. They are correctable, and the right move is almost always a fresh, correct application rather than an appeal that will take longer than the reapplication would.
The mistake to avoid at this moment is reapplying immediately with the same file and a covering note asking for reconsideration. That is not a new application; it is the old one again, and it will do the same thing.
The fortnight after a refusal
Day 1 — Do not book anything
Whatever is still refundable, protect it. Do not issue tickets, do not pay a second visa fee, and do not start a fresh application on the same day out of momentum. The most expensive decisions in this whole process get made in the first twenty-four hours after a refusal, when people are upset and in a hurry.
Days 1–2 — Identify the ground, precisely
Work out exactly what was cited and whether it is an evidence ground or a procedural one. If you cannot tell from the notice, that is the point at which to put it in front of somebody who reads these regularly. A misread ground sends the next three weeks in the wrong direction.
Days 2–3 — Choose: appeal or reapply
Appeal when you can demonstrate the decision was made against evidence that was actually present in the file. Reapply when the file was genuinely thin, which is the more common honest answer. There is a stated deadline for an appeal on the refusal notice, so the choice has to be made quickly even though the decision itself is not urgent.
Days 3–10 — Rebuild what was cited, and only what was cited
If the ground was financial, add six clean months, the ITR, the receipts for what is already paid and, where relevant, a properly documented sponsor. If it was the itinerary, get confirmed bookings behind every night. Do not rewrite the parts of the file that were never questioned; changing everything makes the second application look like a different person's trip.
Days 10–14 — File again, with the refusal declared
Declare the previous refusal on the new form. It is a question that gets asked and an answer that gets checked, and a declared refusal with a visibly improved file is an ordinary application. An undeclared one is a credibility problem that outlives the trip you were applying for.
Throughout — move the travel dates
If you were refused eight weeks before departure, the honest arithmetic is that a rebuilt file plus 15 to 30 days of processing does not comfortably fit. Moving the trip by a month or a season costs less than a second refusal and far less than tickets you cannot use.
Two questions people ask at this point, answered straight
Does a refusal hurt future applications?
- A declared refusal with a rebuilt file is a normal application, not a black mark that follows you
- What damages you is concealment — an undeclared previous refusal is a credibility failure, and credibility is the thing the whole file is trying to establish
- A pattern of repeated refusals on the same ground is harder, because it reads as an unfixed problem rather than a bad day
- Re-applying too quickly with an unchanged file is the most common way a first refusal becomes a second one
Does booking through an operator help?
- It removes named failure modes rather than influencing the decision — nobody influences the decision
- Causes 2, 4, 5 and 6 on the list above are documentation and logistics problems, and confirmed operator bookings with an issued itinerary answer all four
- Cause 1, the most common, stays with you: your finances are your finances and no operator can improve them, only present them properly
- What we will not do is help anyone dress up a file. It does not work, and it converts a refusal into something worse
The South India angle nobody prices in
A refusal costs a Delhi applicant a fee and an afternoon. It costs a Coimbatore applicant considerably more, and this is worth saying because no national guide says it.
France's visa application centre for Tamil Nadu is in Chennai. For an applicant from Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem or Erode, every appointment is a day's travel each way, usually a night's accommodation, and leave from work for every adult in the party because biometrics are given in person. A refused application is not just the fee again — it is that entire journey again, for everyone, and for a family of four the travel and accommodation can exceed the ₹42,000 to ₹48,000 the visa fees themselves come to.
Which is why, for travellers from this part of the country, the economics of getting the file right the first time are completely different from the economics in a metro. An hour spent reading across the documents before anyone books a train to Chennai is worth more here than anywhere else in India. It is the specific reason our document check happens before, not after, the appointment is booked.
Questions we answer daily
How many Indian Schengen visa applications are rejected?
About 15.8% in 2025 — roughly 181,000 refusals out of 1.15 million applications, against a global average of 14.8%. India is the third-largest source of Schengen applications in the world. Indian travellers lost around ₹1.36 billion on failed applications in 2024.
What is the most common reason for a France visa rejection?
Insufficient financial documentation, by a clear margin. Note the word documentation: most refused applicants have the money, and lose the application because the statements were inconsistent, a large deposit was unexplained, or the balance did not visibly cover the itinerary with margin. It accounts for the largest share of the roughly 181,000 Indian applications that failed in 2025.
Can I appeal a France Schengen visa refusal?
Yes, within the deadline stated on the refusal notice. An appeal is worth it when you can show the decision was made against evidence that was already in the file. If the file was genuinely thin, a rebuilt fresh application is usually faster and more likely to succeed than an appeal. Add 15 to 30 days of processing either way, and move the travel dates rather than squeezing them.
How long should I wait before reapplying after a refusal?
Long enough to fix the cited ground and no longer — typically ten days to three weeks. Reapplying the next day with the same documents produces the same outcome. Add 15 to 30 days of processing on top, which usually means moving the travel dates rather than squeezing the new application in.
Does a Schengen rejection affect my US or UK visa?
A refusal is a fact you declare, not a bar. What harms any future application is an undeclared refusal discovered later, because it turns a documentation problem into a credibility problem. Declare it, and let the improved file speak for itself. Roughly 1 in 6 Indian applicants is refused, so it is common rather than exceptional.
Do I get the visa fee back if I am refused?
No. The fee is for processing the application, not for the outcome, which is precisely why the ₹1.36 billion figure for failed Indian applications in 2024 is as large as it is. For a family of four applying from Tamil Nadu, add the travel to Chennai and the leave to that loss.
I applied to France but spent more nights in Switzerland. What happens?
That is the main-destination rule, and it is a listed refusal cause. You apply to the country with the most nights, or to the country of first entry if the nights are equal. Count on the confirmed hotel vouchers rather than the plan in your head — Paris-plus-Switzerland trips split close enough to catch people out. 4 Paris nights against 3 Swiss nights is France; 3 against 4 is Switzerland.
Will a travel agent guarantee my visa?
Anybody who guarantees a visa is telling you something they cannot know. What an operator genuinely removes is documentation and logistics failure — incomplete paperwork, inadequate insurance, a vague itinerary, the wrong consulate. Your financial evidence and your ties to India remain yours. Indian travellers lost about ₹1.36 billion on failed applications in 2024.
